AI SAFETY

How to Protect Yourself from AI Scammers

By Carmen Greger

AI Safety is vital; Be informed and aware.  As technology continues to evolve, so do the methods used by scammers to trick people. One of the latest tactics involves the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to clone voices and mimic people. These scammers use this AI voice cloning technology to create recordings of people’s voices and then use these recordings to trick people into thinking they are talking to someone they know.

Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself from scammers who use AI to trick people:

Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls

If you receive a call from someone you don’t know, be cautious. Scammers often use unsolicited calls to initiate their scams. If the caller claims to be someone you know, ask them questions to confirm their identity. Take safety precautions like creating a safe word with your family

Don’t trust caller ID

Scammers can use technology to manipulate caller ID and make it look like the call is coming from a legitimate source. If you receive a call from a number you don’t recognize, don’t assume that the caller ID is accurate.

Don’t share personal information

Scammers will often try to get you to share personal information such as your social security number or banking information. Don’t share this information with anyone you don’t know or trust.

Be wary of urgent requests

Scammers will often create a sense of urgency to pressure you into making a quick decision. If you receive a call or message that requires an urgent response, take a moment to think it over and don’t be afraid to say no.

Verify the caller’s identity

If the caller claims to be someone you know, ask them questions that only that person would know. For example, ask about a recent event or conversation you had with them. If the caller is unable to answer these questions, it’s likely that they are not who they claim to be. Creating a safe word with your family and close friends could help ensure that you can effectively confirm the identity of the person on the phone with you.

Use two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a code in addition to your password. This makes it much harder for scammers to access your accounts, even if they have your password.

Stay up to date on scams

Scammers are always coming up with new tactics, so it’s important to stay informed about the latest scams. Keep an eye on the news and social media to stay informed about current scams and be wary of anything that seems too good to be true.
