After a long journey, especially by plane, most people want the freedom of their own transport as soon as they land. While there are upsides to public transport, the greater flexibility allows them to see the sights and attractions whichever order they choose. It is a common first time experience to rent a car in Qatar and the Middle East. The region is made for car travel, the large expansive cities and open countryside are quite inhospitable in nature and offer a great opportunity for exploration. However, there is a lot more to the process than simply grabbing the keys and heading to the outback. The rental experience can be very easy if you are familiar with the required identification and the drive in Qatar. Understanding the pattern of renting a car will allow you to easily make the transition from arriving in Qatar to hitting the open road.
There are legalities you have to check off before looking at vehicles. Vehicle rentals are usually reserved for those over the age of 21. However, some of the higher-end vehicles require renters to be at least 25. When it comes to foreign travelers, driving licenses from their home countries are deemed valid for a period of about 14 days from the time of entry. However, it’s recommended to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP). The IDP is a legal translation of a driver’s home country license, and some rental agreements require it to be an active insurance coverage limitation. For new residents, once the transition from a visitor visa to a residency permit occurs, home country driving licenses suddenly become invalid. At this point, a local driving license must be acquired.
First-time renters tend to get confused about the necessity of a credit card. Most reputable agencies have a credit card in the name of the lead driver in order to place a security hold. This security hold is used to deal with any traffic violations, tolls, or minor damage to the car during the rental period. Keep in mind that this is not a charge, but a hold, and the money should be made available to you within 14 to 21 days after the car is returned. Some new apps and some micro companies are accepting debit cards or “no-deposit” options but the rest of the industry is still standard with a credit card. You may not be able to rent a car if your credit card does not have a high enough limit or the card itself is not valid for 3 to 6 months after the rental period.
The most important part of the rental agreement is the insurance, particularly in the Middle East, where some Third-Party Liability Insurance is mandated by law, but only protects the other parties involved in the accident. Insurance that includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is necessary in order to protect yourself and the rental vehicle. Even if you have a CDW, you will still be liable for an “excess” amount which means that you will be financially responsible for the ‘excess’ amount if the car is damaged. For first time renters, it is usually worth it to take out a little more money to get a “Super CDW” or “Full Protection” which will mean that the excess amount is reduced to zero. Those that will remain for a long time in the country will find that a formal car lease in Qatar includes these types of insurance as a staple in the insurance packages, making it less complicated and providing more peace of mind during the duration of the lease.
New countries come with new rules, and driving is no exception. In this part of the world, driving is done on the right, and there is an extensive system of very advanced cameras that monitor and enforce speed limit compliance. It is also recommended that you understand the system of toll roads. Many cities have automated electronic tagging systems that scan your car as you drive through certain areas. The rental company will record the activity and charge you at the end of the rental period. Clearly understand the rules about driving and talking on mobile phones and the legal drinking limits, as the laws are very strict. Understanding these rules can help you avoid receiving large, unwanted fines after your relaxing holiday and keep you safe.
A short-term visit can easily turn into a month-long project or an extended holiday. Should you need to use the vehicle for a longer period than you had originally anticipated, don’t just keep the car without taking action; daily rates can be several times the amount of the extended rates. Most companies accept changes to your rental contract if you contact them in advance. To avoid paying daily rates, a car rental Doha monthly plan is usually the best option since it puts you in a new pricing bracket with better conditions. This is what you want in order to keep moving without the inconvenience of returning the vehicle and renewing the contract every week.
Taking the plunge and renting a car for the first time can be less intimidating with the right approach. You need to have the right documents, make a decision on your insurance, abide by the local rules for driving, and you will have the freedom of traveling without the constraints of public transport. Being able to access less traveled places and experience greater control of how you move within a city with heavy roads is one of the top reasons for traveling. It won’t be long before you have a lot of experience driving on the open roads. With just a little bit of work, your first rental experience will be the one to set the standards for all your travels.
